Join us to experiment, break things, and imagine new possibilities. Data Club meetings are meetings, not workshops. An introduction to a bit of software is followed by opportunities to try the software in your own environment and on your own terms.
This is an introduction to download, read, and manipulate data from IPUMS using R. IPUMS is the world’s largest publicly available population database, providing census data, social science and health science survey data from around the world integrated across time and space.
The session will start with how to browse and download the various data products from the IPUMS website, so even if you are not an R user, you can participate in the first half hour. Then attendees will work with IPUMS data API to create a reproducible data work flow in R.
Topics covered: R, IPUMS, data API
Data Club meetings occur six times a semester. Open to everyone in the Columbia community, these informal events typically start with a presentation on a specific use of data in Python, R, Julia, or JavaScript, then open up to questions, collaborative work, and discussion. Computation typically occurs within an online notebook workflow, and participants of all skill levels are welcome.
Please bring a laptop!
